NEW YORK (AP) — In the latest byproduct of the widening global financial crisis, Citigroup Inc. will acquire the banking operations of Wachovia Corp. in a deal facilitated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp
Citigroup Inc. will acquire the bulk of Wachovia's assets and liabilities, including five depository institutions and assume senior and subordinated debt of Wachovia Corp. Wachovia Corporation will continue to own AG Edwards and Evergreen. The FDIC has entered into a loss sharing arrangement on a pre-identified pool of loans. Under the agreement, Citigroup Inc. will absorb up to $42 billion of losses on a $312 billion pool of loans. The FDIC will absorb losses beyond that. Citigroup has granted the FDIC $12 billion in preferred stock and warrants to compensate the FDIC for bearing this risk Wachovia Corp. in a deal facilitated by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp
The sale does not include Wachovia Securities, which has nine offices in Portland and 16 others across Oregon.
Reports late last week indicated that struggling Wachovia was seeking a suitor. The Charlotte-based bank fumbled badly on its ill-timed purchase of Oakland, Calif.-based Golden West Financial Corp. Much of the bank’s mortgage woes stem from that $25 billion deal completed in 2006. Many analysts said that deal was a huge mistake even before it closed.

Sony says it is recalling 440,000 units of Vaio laptop computers worldwide due to faulty parts that could trigger overheating.
It has been reported on other online sources that certain VAIO TZ models (TZ100, 200, 300 and 2000 series in the US) may overheat and cause burns.
Irregularly positioned wires near the computer’s hinge and/or a dislodged screw inside the hinge can cause a short circuit and overheating.
This poses a burn hazard to consumers.
The recall will involve Sony, which is battling to restore consumer confidence in its brands, offering free repairs to the laptops in 48 countries where the Vaio is sold.
